Frequently asked questions: sonar for blind dogs

Echo Smart Activ®

Have questions about your blind dog and the Echo Smart Activ®? This FAQ covers all the answers: compatibility, installation, battery life, sonar learning and differences with a halo or bumper ring.
Based on echolocation technology, this guidance device gives your blind dog sound vision far more effective than a halo or harness. Find here the most frequently asked questions from blind dog owners.

Compatibility and use

Yes, Echo Smart Activ® is suitable for the vast majority of completely blind dogs, regardless of the cause of their blindness. The sonar works through echolocation: it emits ultrasounds that bounce off obstacles and create echoes that your dog learns to interpret. Your dog naturally has everything it takes to understand how to use it. The only requirement is that your dog has functional high-frequency hearing and can wear a loose collar. If in doubt, do not hesitate to contact us.

Echo Smart Activ® is designed for blind dogs of all sizes. The device weighs only 30 grams and measures 7.6 × 2.3 cm — it goes unnoticed on the collar of a Cavalier King Charles as well as on that of a Labrador. It attaches to a loose collar, regardless of your dog’s size.

Yes. Echo Smart Activ® is suitable regardless of the cause of blindness: cataracts, glaucoma, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), SARDS, uveitis or any other eye condition. However, your dog must have no residual vision. The sonar through echolocation provides a substitute sound vision that allows your dog to perceive its environment through echoes.

For some dogs with residual vision yes, for others, they will prefer to focus on their remaining vision (light spots or other). It is therefore unfortunately difficult to predict whether Echo Smart Activ® will work.

Yes. Learning sound vision does not depend on age but on hearing and your dog’s ability to adapt. Dogs aged 8, 10 and even 14 years old have learned to use the sonar Echo Smart Activ®. Learning may simply take a little longer. Each dog progresses at its own pace.

Yes, functional high-frequency hearing is required. Echo Smart Activ® works through echolocation: the sonar emits ultrasounds that bounce off obstacles and produce echoes perceptible by your dog. If your dog is both blind and deaf, the device will unfortunately not be suitable. If this is the case, please contact us for advice.

Learning takes place in 4 natural phases: discovery, exploration, understanding and assimilation. On average, the first avoidance reflexes appear within a few hours to a few days. Some dogs have the “click” very quickly, others need more time. The user guide on the website details 3 progressive exercises to support your dog. Yes, the sonar works in both environments. Indoors, walls and furniture produce strong and clear echoes — it is the easiest environment to start with (level 2). If your dog seems lost indoors while using echolocation outdoors, lower the sound level: ultrasounds may be reflecting off the walls indoors, creating too many return echoes. Outdoors, echoes vary depending on the surfaces (trees, poles, low walls, cars).

My blind dog bumps into everything: is the sonar the solution?

Because the halo, anti-collision ring or protective circle work by contact: your dog must hit the obstacle to know it is there. The impact is cushioned, but your dog still endures it — it never anticipates it. Result: it remains hesitant, stressed and dependent on its protection. The sonar Echo Smart Activ® works differently: thanks to echolocation, your dog detects obstacles from a distance (up to 3 metres) and avoids them before any contact.

The halo is a bumper. The sonar offers flashes of sound vision of its environment. The difference is fundamental: your dog no longer endures, it “sees”. Read our detailed echolocation vs halo comparison →

The anti-collision ring, protective circle or bumper cushion the impact at the moment of contact. Your dog always hits the obstacle — it is just protected from the worst. Echolocation works like a radar: the sonar Echo Smart Activ® emits ultrasounds that bounce off obstacles. Your dog learns to interpret these echoes and adjusts its trajectory before any contact. It develops a true sound vision and regains autonomous navigation, where the halo keeps it dependent.

It is not recommended. Your dog learns from its mistakes.

Very likely. The halo is bulky (100 to 300g + harness), restricts movement and disturbs many dogs. Echo Smart Activ® weighs only 30 grams and attaches directly to a loose collar that your dog already wears. Most dogs forget about it within minutes. That is the difference between wearing equipment and not feeling anything at all.

Technical questions

Yes, this is completely normal. Echo Smart Activ® emits ultrasounds whose frequency is designed to be perceived by your dog, not by the human ear. The echoes produced by the ultrasounds bouncing off obstacles are what your dog learns to interpret to create a sound vision of its environment.

Echo Smart Activ® is equipped with a USB-C rechargeable battery with a 400 mAh capacity that provides up to 3 months of battery life. Thanks to Smart Activ technology, the sonar only activates when your dog is moving — at rest, it automatically goes into standby mode. In addition to your dog’s comfort and better learning, this is what allows such long battery life with such a lightweight device.

Recharging is done via a standard USB-C cable (included in the box). Plug in the device, it is fully recharged in 20 minutes. No batteries to change, no tools required. An indicator light tells you when charging is complete.

Echo Smart Activ® is resistant to splashes and moderate rain. Your dog can walk in the rain or drink from its bowl without risk (if the device doesn’t soak in it). However, the device is not designed to be submerged: avoid prolonged swimming or diving. Remove it before bathing your dog.

Maintenance is minimal. Wipe the device with a soft, slightly damp cloth if needed. Avoid harsh chemicals and do not run it under water. Regularly check that the emitters (the two small grilles) are not blocked by dirt or hair. A clean device = optimal detection.

Echo Smart Activ® has 3 sound intensity modes to adapt to your dog’s environment. Mode switching is done directly on the device. The user guide included in the box details the procedure and helps you choose the right mode for learning (mode 2).

The sonar detects solid obstacles: walls, furniture, trees, poles, kerbs, parked cars. It also detects glass surfaces and most everyday objects. However, certain situations require your vigilance: descending stairs (no bouncing surface in front of the dog), bodies of water, very thin objects (wire, fine mesh, certain thin chair legs) and surfaces that absorb ultrasounds (thick fabrics, very sparse hedges, snow). The user guide details all these situations so you can accompany your dog safely.

The ultrasounds emitted by Echo Smart Activ® are of very low intensity and short range. They have no effect on other dogs, cats or animals in your household who can perceive them.
